This represents the first locally transmitted case of the virus reported in the continental United States this year. In April, Texas expanded Zika testing in pregnant women and those with possible symptoms in six counties deemed most at risk for the virus. On Monday the CDC updated its recommendations on screening pregnant women for the virus. Zika is a great concern to pregnant women and those hoping to become pregnant because it can have devastating consequences for babies born tomothers who were infected while pregnant. The exception to this is for those who have had a possible indication of Zika-related findings of their fetus in an ultrasound.

MIAMI -- Florida health officials have reported the state's first sexually transmitted Zika case in 2017. "It is important to remember Zika can also be transmitted sexually and to take precautions if you or your partner traveled to an area where Zika is active. The infected resident's partner recently traveled to Cuba and was ill with symptoms consistent with Zika, health officials said in a statement. Last week, Texas health officials reported a Zika infection likely contracted through a mosquito bite in recent months. The news release said health officials have notified mosquito control and that appropriate "mosquito reduction activities" were taking place.
