Steve ByerlyThe state Department of Health on Monday reported the first West Nile virus death of a Mississippian in 2017. The Health Department also reported 19 cases of the West Nile virus in Mississippi. In 2016, Mississippi had 43 West Nile virus cases with two deaths. "This sadly serves as a reminder that the threat of West Nile virus should be taken very seriously," said State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers in a news release.
